Chapter 2

Chapter 2
Dr. Treves is performing an operation at the London Hospital where he works as a surgeon. He is working on his patient and talking with his colleagues when the boy from the fun-fair interrupts. He informs Treves that he has found the exhibit. He quickly asks the boy where he found him, pays him, and takes off towards his destination. When he gets to the shop where the creature is being kept, he asks a boy where its owner his and the boy goes to get him. The boy soon comes back with the man and the man asks Treves what he wants. Treves explains that he only wants to his this exhibit and that he would give him a good amount of money in order to see it. After talking with the man who is called Bytes, Treves is finally able to go inside and see the creature. The two men and the boy make their way into the basement of the shop and Bytes gives his speech about the exhibit before allowing Treves to see. When he pulls back the curtain, Treves sees that the only normal part on the creature is its left arm and he tries to take a better look. The elephant man does not seem to listen to its owner when he tells it what to do until he uses force. Treves notices the growths on the elephant man and also notices the disfigurations of his skull. Treves then tells Bytes that he has seen all he could in the basement and this somewhat confuses Bytes. He then explains that he would like to borrow the elephant man in order to examine him more closely and tells Bytes that he will pay him. Treves says that he would like to see the elephant man the next day and Bytes tells him that he will have him ready and at the hospital.

Bytes is a money hungry guy who is willing to do anything for money.
It angers me that Bytes treat the elephant man the way that he does.
"Life is full of surprises. Ladies and gentlemen, consider the fate of this creature's poor mother. In the fourth month of her maternal condition, she was struck down by a wile elephant." Bytes leered. "Struck down, if you take my meaning, on an uncharted African isle. The result is plain to see, ladies and gentlemen-the terrible Elephant Man." This shows that Bytes will say anything in order to get people interested in the elephant man. He is only interested in the money he will receive and nothing else.
