Chapter 10
Both Treves and Carr-Gomm enter the committee meeting with a small amount of hope that the elephant man will be allowed to stay there. Their idea is quickly shot down by the committee and they try to protest. Carr-Gomm decided to write a letter to the newspaper in order to try and receive donations from the society. He knew that many important people read this newspaper and he figured they would be generous donors. One of these important people, was an actress by the name of Madge Kendal and after reading the letter, she decided she wanted to meet John Merrick, the elephant man.
"I'd very much like to meet that gentleman," she said to herself. "He sounds almost...Shakespearean." This shows that Mrs. Kendal has an interest in meeting John.
