Chapter 1
The first chapter of this novel starts off with Dr. Frederick Treves. Dr. Treves is at the fun-fair with his family and he wonders into the freak tent. He soon realizes that most of the exhibits are fakes until a man makes him aware of another exhibit that is terrifying. Treves makes his way into the crowd so that he can see this appalling creature. He fights to get in between other people who are running away from the horrific scene but he cannot get a full view of what this "thing" truly is due to the policemen in the way. He catches a glimpse of the creature as the curtain is pulled down and he wishes to see more of it but he cannot. He notices a boy staring at the poster of this so-called Elephant Man and he gives the boy money to find the creature for him. Treves soon meets with his wife and daughters and the one daughter asks to go in the freak tent and both parents say she is not allowed. After arguing with his daughter, his wife asks him if he has found what he has been looking for and he tells her that he is not sure but he will find it soon.
I feel that Dr. Treves can be described curious at this point in the story.
His wife Anne can be seen as a protective mother.
At first I was unsure as to why the exhibitor did not want to close his exhibit but then I learned that it is his livelihood.
I also did not understand how some creature could be so frightening, but after reading Treves' description I understand.
I feel that Treves will find the elephant man.

Great summaries, but remember that this is similar to a response journal.
